Ms. Corrado wanted to start a program at PSIS 206 to help kindergartners during lunch by assisting them with their meals. She told Ms. Aspinall, the guidance counselor, and they made it happen! The eighth graders have the same lunch period as the kindergarteners, so Ms. Aspinall chose a few eighth graders to start the program. But many students wanted to join the volunteer program, so they added an after-school program. Now the volunteer program has lunch periods as well as an after-school program.
The volunteer program happens during third period, and the after-school program happens on Wednesdays and Thursdays. There are around 10 volunteers, and about thirty elementary school students. The morning program is only available for the eighth grade because it is during their lunch time, but the after-school program is available for the whole middle school.
They started this program because Ms. Aspinall liked seeing older students interact with younger students. “We started the program to create a stronger sense of community in the school and unite the middle and elementary schools,” she said. One of the struggles was finding students who would be dedicated to this program and wouldn’t just want to get out of the lunchroom during lunch.
Eighth grader Hailey was inspired by her teachers, particularly Ms. Cengia. Ms. Cengia really helps children develop their character. “Volunteering allows her to give back to the community and help children,” said Ms. Aspinall. Ms. Aspinall hopes to continue this program next year.
Hailey expressed, “I enjoy seeing kids develop their character, and enjoy the program. Aside from the benefits and food, no matter the challenges, I will always pick volunteering.” Hailey says that during lunchtime, they have about 30 minutes to spend with the younger kids. During the after-school program, they have two hours.
If you are interested in joining the program, please see Ms. Aspinall in room 252. There is an information session for seventh graders on June 3rd after-school. Pizza will be served.
Students in middle school hope the program continues next year.
Thank you, Ms. Aspinall and Hailey Mei, for being such great sports when they were interviewed.
