PSIS 206 partnered with an organization called City Lore, which has experience with painting murals in schools.
The entire seventh grade, approximately 150 students, is working on the project. The art sessions happen during social studies classes, facilitated by Ms. Moncovic and Mr. Mateu from City Lore. Students started working on the wall in February and have put their hearts and souls into it. They were asked to draw something meaningful on a piece of paper and add it to the artwork later. The project is expected to be completed in early May.
Ms. Corrado started this program because the middle schoolers didn’t have any art classes to take. She wanted to get the art program for the seventh grade in particular because they get to make amazing artwork for the school community. Ms. Corrado planned for this mural because the artworks are meaningful to student culture. They added a dragon to the mural to support the Chinese community and the Statue of Liberty to symbolize the American people, and they added ties to different religions.
Under the direction of Mr. Mateu, students began the process by painting the selected wall in white primer. Then they made a graph for the different artwork sections. They planned and sketched in pencil, and now they are working with paint. The project is moving along and is almost finished.
All in all, the seventh graders are painting a beautiful mural expressing their beliefs, and the mural shows that everyone can make something amazing.
